1. Introduction

What would happen if you were traveling in a foreign country all of a sudden you fell ill? Lets say that nobody around you speaks English, and you don’t speak their language either. What would you do? How would you tell the people around you that you are sick?

Maybe you would use hand-signals and gesture that you don’t feel well, and hope someone understands that you need a hospital.

But then what!? No one knows what is wrong with you and the only thing that would help is if someone could interpret your words.

Finally someone arrives who speaks very broken English. They hardly understand you and you hardly understand them, but they help you find a hospital. Now this person, who barely understands any English, is going to interpret your words for the doctors.

Could you trust this person to know the right words? What skills would help them tell the doctor what you need and what is wrong with you?

This WebQuest is designed to teach you the elements of interpretation, and the skills interpreters use to help them choose the correct words and accurately express what people are saying.
