STEP 4: Employer’s Perspective: Why hire an interpreter?

Everyone in the class will be paired up for this step of the WebQuest. Your teacher will designate the pairs.

You will choose one jobs description from the jobs.com site and you will pretend to be the interviewers working for the company that is advertising the position.

Find the website of the employer and learn about the company. You may need to use Google to find the employer’s website.

- Write two paragraphs describing why the company hires interpreters.
- Write a list of eight questions that you would ask a person who is applying for the position. These questions must be relevant to the skills and experience needed to be an interpreter, and must take into considerations the specific needs of the company.

Create a Word document. Copy and paste the job description from the internet into the Word document, and below the description write your two paragraphs and list your eight questions.

One of you will write an email to the professor that includes both of your names in the body of the message. Attach the word document to this email.

Guiding Questions:
- What does the company do that requires two or more languages?
- Does the company sell something to more than one country?
- Does the company have an office in a foreign country?
- Are the clients of the company from foreign countries?
- Will the person be required to do tasks unrelated to interpreting?
- What benefit will the company have after hiring an interpreter?
